Leader in HTML5 and mobile stock charting files four technical analysis patents

Charlottesville, VA – April 3, 2013 – ChartIQ, a leader in stock and forex charts, today announced that it has filed for patent protection on four of its innovations in technical analysis.

The patent-pending technologies from ChartIQ include:

Divergence detection, which identifies divergences between price action and oscillating indicators, and visually plots associated price targets.
Automated gap detection and plotting, which allows analysts to quickly identify current and historical trading gaps
Visual sequential count indicator, a novel visual trading signal for sequential count algorithms, such as 9/13 Count
Price projection tool (aka “forward testing”), which allows analysts to test theories for future price movement, using their choice of technical indicators.

“Technical analysis as a discipline has existed for hundreds of years and has developed substantially over the past few decades. Unfortunately, technology innovation has not … Read More »

Gap detection on stock charts

Posted by Dan in Blog Post. No Comments

13th February

One of the most popular features in ChartIQ Plus for iPad, Windows8, and web browsers is our gap detection and plotting feature.  While some gaps are easy to spot with the naked eye, smaller ones can be tough to spot – and really important gaps from a long time ago, are often off-screen and outside of your view.

Here we can see the SPY and a big gap from New Years 2013:

Easy enough, though with ChartIQ gap detection enabled, it would look like this:

As you can see, the gap has been automatically detected and shaded in.  What’s that just below the green candle in mid-November? It’s another gap, that wasn’t quite so easy to spot.  Let’s zoom out and see where that came from.

As we can now see, the bottom of that candle was testing (and partially filling) a gap from late … Read More »

Futures Charting – coming soon!

Posted by Dan in Blog Post. No Comments

12th February

We’re lucky at ChartIQ to have extremely dedicated users (thank you!) who love our products, and share with us their feedback on how to make them better.  One of the most requested features has been futures charting – energy, grains, softs, equities, currencies, rates, metals, etc.

You ask and we listen!  End of day futures data is coming to ChartIQ and ChartIQ Plus in the next few weeks.  We’ll also making futures data available in our trading simulators, so that you can practice futures trading with our full set of technical analysis tools.

Real-time futures charting is probably a bit off in the future, due to the high cost of redistributing real-time data from the CME and other futures exchanges.  If you have interest in real-time futures charts, please do email us through the website and let us know, as it’ll help … Read More »

New “Magnet Mode” for drawing and annotating stock charts

Posted by Dan in Blog Post. No Comments

17th January

A new version of ChartIQ Plus just hit the AppStore today (new versions of ChartIQ and ChartIQ Practice Trading Simulator are on the way!) which includes a new drawing feature called Magnet Mode.  Magnet Mode has been available on the web version of ChartIQ for a  while now, and has finally made it to the iPad app.

Normally if you draw a segment (or any other drawing type), you can get pretty darn close to the top of a bar or tip of a candlestick, but sometimes it’s tricky to get it exactly there. If you look really closely, you’ll see you’re not quite on it.

For the perfectionists among us (me included!), it just wasn’t quite perfect, especially when you’d switch to an intraday chart and see it close-up.

Enter Magnet Mode.  Now when I want to snap right to an OHLC … Read More »

New versions of ChartIQ and ChartIQ Plus available in the AppStore

23rd November

Wanted to provide a quick update to all of our current users – open the AppStore on your iPad and download the latest update for ChartIQ and ChartIQ Plus.

Here’s a brief run-down of the changes:

ChartIQ Pro is now known at ChartIQ Plus.  New name, new icon, same great product.
Crosshairs are now optional. Within the Options menu at the top of the screen, you can now enable and disable crosshairs.  When crosshairs are turned off, scrolling is done with one finger.  While most of our customers love the crosshairs, we got some feedback that having 1-finger scrolling would be a nice option.
Horizontal line drawing tool.  While it was always possible to draw a horizontal line for support or resistance, it was tough to get it perfectly flat.  There’s now a separate drawing tool for horizontal lines.  Once selected, position the crosshairs … Read More »

Is ChartIQ PTS a Paper Trading system?

Posted by Dan in Blog Post. No Comments

22nd June

Download ChartIQ PTS
from the iTunes Store®

The question has come in a few times recently, so I thought I’d address it with a short blog post.  No, ChartIQ Practice Trading Simulator is not a paper trading system… at least in the classic sense.  Paper Trading normally implies taking fake positions in the real market, where what ChartIQ does is take fake positions in a historical market.  The difference is subtle, but intentional, and we want to be clear about it.

If your interest is in day trading stocks or forex, you should probably use a traditional paper trading or virtual stock market system.  If you’re a technical analyst, interested in swing trading or even a fundamental trader using technical analysis to improve your market timing, ChartIQ PTS is perfect.

What if you have a great idea for how to profitably trade in a … Read More »

RSI Divergence and Positive and Negative Reversals

Posted by Dan in Blog Post. No Comments

20th June

While Relative Strength Indicator (RSI) is a commonly used and well-understood technical analysis study, bullish and bearish divergences, as well as Momentum Discrepancy Reversal Points (aka positive and negative reversals) are far less frequently encountered.

ChartIQ is the only iPad stock charting tool that I’m aware of, and frankly the only technical analysis charting tool on any platform, to offer a unique study based on these two indicators.  I’ve just posted a page on how to use ChartIQ’s RSI Divergence and Positive & Negative Reversal Study.

For those interested in more of the theory behind RSI divergences, I highly recommend the article Accurately Analyzing RSI Divergences by Tom Aspray over at Forbes.  For a more in depth read, check out the book New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems.

Here’s what the study looks like in action:

Why stock charts will be the discussion, not the topic of it

Posted by Dan in Blog Post. No Comments

17th June

Friend of ChartIQ, Leigh Drogen, sent out a tweet that alerted me to an article by Tim Hartford called Stock Market Molecules.  The article didn’t surprise me much – I’m a firm believer in emotion driving the stock market, so reading about the chemical underpinnings of that made sense.  What it lacked in surprises, it made up for by provoking an interesting discussion between myself and Terry (my co-founder here at ChartIQ).

The stock chart and the art of technical analysis are one of the purest ways to measure market sentiment; long before quants were crunching Twitter and Stocktwits feeds, technicians have been reading in to the market psychology though the stock chart.

So why do we discuss the stock chart in the comments of a blog, or in 140 characters of a tweet?  Should the social finance discussion – the meta market … Read More »

9 Count and 13 Count Buy and Sell Signals

Posted by Dan in Blog Post. No Comments

8th June

We’ve had a lot of questions come in about the 9 Count and 13 Count Buy and Sell indicators in ChartIQ Pro and ChartIQ Practice Trading Simulator work.  These indicators are normally something that people calculate manually, or perhaps use a spreadsheet if they’re really serious.  ChartIQ Pro and ChartIQ PTS both feature our unique visual study which calculates and displays these, and also visually shows the associated support or resistance lines on the chart when a signal completes.

For the full rundown of how it works, please check out How ChartIQ’s 9 Count and 13 Count Buy and Sell signals Work.

ChartIQ Pro is live in the AppStore

Download ChartIQ Pro
from the iTunes Store®

Here at ChartIQ we couldn’t be happier – our flagship iPad stock charting app, ChartIQ Pro, hit the iTunes AppStore today!

What makes ChartIQ Pro not just another ipad stock charting app? Is it our awesome automatic gap detection and charting? RSI Divergence plotting? Built-in social sharing for Twitter and Stocktwits?

Nope. Don’t get me wrong – those are features we’re proud of, but what makes ChartIQ Pro different is that it’s focused on saving you time rather than telling you what to do.

Take the our gap detection feature, for instance. Trading on gaps is nothing novel. It’s a well-worn technique, yet there’s not a single stock charting tool that simply detects gaps and displays them in a way that saves the analyst the effort of searching with their own eyes. Flip is another one. Printing out … Read More »

iPad stock trading at 30,000 feet

Posted by Dan in Blog Post. No Comments

25th May

Last night I was flying back from a conference in Phoenix and had some time to kill on the plane.  The flight didn’t have inflight wifi so I couldn’t catch up on the day’s news.  What I did was pull out my iPad and spend a couple of hours practice trading in ChartIQ PTS.

As the flight hit turbulence, so did my trades…

Overall, I fared pretty well, with only a few minor misses.  I even managed to steer clear of the flash crash (I didn’t know until I looked at my trading ledger later that I was trading the S&P 500 from Aug ’08 on).  A solid mix of indicators – stochastics, 9 Count and 13 Count Buy and Sell signals, RSI divergence, 50- and 200-day moving averages – guided my stock trades along.

All-in-all, I can’t think of a better way … Read More »

Happy Birthday, ChartIQ PTS

16th May

ChartIQ Practice Trading Simulator just hit one month in the iTunes App Store!  It’s been a great month for us, watching sales come in, getting rating and reviews in the App Store, and most importantly – hearing directly from users with their thoughts and feedback.  Overall, people thrilled – that it’s the best technical analysis trading simulator they’ve come across, and not just on the iPad.

A lot of users have asked about when we’re releasing ChartIQ Pro – our full-fledged stock chart technical analysis app for the iPad.  We’re thrilled that people like PTS, and even more ecstatic that they are waiting for our second app to hit the store.

So, where’s ChartIQ Pro?

In short, it’s almost here!  We’ve been going through beta and usability testing, and have been working to refine the product.  We’ve also been focused on adding … Read More »

ChartIQ PTS beta underway

Here at ChartIQ headquarters, we’re very excited that the beta of our first app, ChartIQ Practice Trading Simulator™ is underway.  Thanks to the kindness of our ChartIQ Twitter followers, we’ve got about 25 people using ChartIQ PTS and providing us with extremely useful usage data and feedback.

What have we learned from the beta?  It’s a bit too early to tell, but we’ve already been able to identify some usability improvements that’ll be added in to the first release.  Feedback has been extremely positive on some of our more niche features, like 9 Count and 13 Count Buy and Sell Signal indicators, Market Profile bell curve, etc.  A few features that we’re really excited about, like being able to make a projection and have all of your studies calculated out, haven’t yet caught anyone’s attention – we need to make them … Read More »
